Main Modes of Transportation in Phuket

Phuket is one of the main islands that comprise the country of Thailand. In fact, it is the country's largest island, about the size of Singapore, and is a popular tourist destination. The island has many important and interesting places such as the Two Heroines Museum, Thalang National Museum, and Hat Karon beach. To get to these places, one needs to take a ride on one of the region's modes of transportation.

Transportation in Phuket is varied. International and domestic flights are served by the Phuket International Airport, which is found at the north side of the island. In terms of passenger traffic, it is the second busiest airport in Thailand. There are no trains going to Phuket although one can take a train from Bangkok to nearby Surat Thani where one can then ride a songthaew to reach Phuket City.

Songthaews are popular modes of transport within the island. These are modified pickup trucks or larger trucks. Their customisation is most noticeable in the addition of benches on either side of the vehicle's back, a raised roof, and curtains that hang at the side. These are the cheapest mode of transportation when travelling from one town to another.

Tuk-tuks can also be seen in Phuket. They are small three-wheeled tricycles with a protected cab behind the driver. Usually, they can seat a single driver and about three passengers. In Phuket, they are gradually being replaced by small vans that go to places around a single town.

There are also motorbike taxis, which are found in large numbers in Phuket City and at Patong Beach. Finally, for long distance travel to rural areas, one can ride a bus.
